The Hanseatic city of Wismar on the Baltic Sea coast on Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the ideal destination for a weekend trip, a cultural trip and a relaxed family holiday on the Baltic Sea coast. The lively harbour city and UNESCO world cultural heritage site of Wismar enchants visitors with its Baltic Sea beach and impressive sights. Restored town houses and the unique Marktplatz (Market Square), monuments to Gothic brick building, ensure a romantic setting.
And once you have explored the impressive city, the Baltic Sea with its wonderful beaches and soothing Baltic Sea air invites you to relax and take long walks on the beach. Families and wellness tourists immerse themselves in the Wonnemar pool complex – the Wismar water park Wonnemar awaits its visitors with saunas, massages, wave pools and turbo slides. The beautiful Tierpark Wismar (Wismar Zoo) boasts far-reaching parks and play areas as well the wild animals it houses. And if you have always wanted to get a fishing licence, you have come to the right place: Because Wismar is a real water sport and fishing paradise.
And the Hanseatic city of Wismar provides a wealth of culture and harbour atmosphere. Culture fans will find a jam-packed programme of events in Wismar: The four stages of the Theater der Hansestadt (Hanseatic City Theatre) await their visitors. The programme ranges from children's productions to puppet shows to classical ballet, symphony concerts, cabaret and plays. Traditional fishermen's inns, brewery pubs and fine fish restaurants – there are numerous restaurants, bars and cafés in the centre of Wismar.
Wismar is home to impressive buildings dating back to medieval times. Behind the unique backdrop of the Hanseatic city with its colourful gables and old town houses, you can find countless opportunities to get to know the history of the city on the Baltic Sea. A particularly good place to discover it is the Wismar City Museum, the Schabbelhaus. The Mecklenburg Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow (Castle of Plüschow Artists' House) dating back to 1763 houses six guest studios and a print workshop. The beautiful brick house is the cultural centre of the region and presents exhibitions of contemporary art and art events such as the art and crafts market, concerts and performances – exhibition openings at the Castle of Plüschow often become "rural festivals".
Party people, travelling entertainers and "Alte Schweden" (old Swedes) travel to the lively Hanseatic city in August, as every year the popular Schwedenfest takes place in Wismar – the city is then full and fun-packed. Over 100,000 international guests take part in the amazing spectacle, which takes a nostalgic look back to the time when Wismar was occupied by the Swedish. The annual Hafentage (Harbour Days) celebrate the birthday of the Alter Hafen (Old Harbour) and the Christmas Market in Wismar's historical Marktplatz (Market Square) includes an art market with a wonderful Christmas atmosphere.
